Kyle Gibbons, Head of Global Accounts Thomson Reuters Confirmation

For over 10 years Kyle's career has been focused on the audit profession, first as an auditor, then serving in consultative roles across resourcing and technology. He is also a regular speaker on the topics of fraud, information and technology across audit.

Currently he is a Director at Thomson Reuters where he has global oversight of the organisation's relationships with the world's largest accounting firms in relation to the Confirmation service. He also manages Confirmation's operations across Europe and South Africa.

Dave was named General Manager of Audit for Thomson Reuters Tax & Accounting Professionals in September 2023, following Thomson Reuters’ acquisition of SurePrep earlier that year. His extensive experience and expertise in audit workflow are helping the Tax & Accounting Professionals business continue to grow and expand in the audit space.  

Previously, Dave was CEO of SurePrep, an end-to-end tax automation solution for tax professionals and taxpayers that he founded in 2002. He started his career as a CPA with PwC.  

Dave earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. 

Steve Lindsey TR
Steve Lindsey, Director, Product Management Audit & Assurance, Thomson Reuters

Steve leads the design and development efforts of Thomson Reuters’ online and desktop audit and assurance products.

He has worked for Thomson Reuters for over 30 years, first as an editor and author of audit and accounting guidance and later leading the development of Thomson Reuters’ audit software product line, including Checkpoint Tools, SMART Practice Aids, AdvanceFlow and Checkpoint Engage.

Steve is a CPA and has been active in the accounting profession for over 40 years. He began his career in public practice working with KPMG and a small, local firm in Fort Worth, Texas. The hands-on experience gained providing audit, accounting, and tax services to clients ranging from small businesses to multinational companies gives him a unique understanding of the challenges faced today by auditors and their clients.

Alex Russell, Head of Audit and Assurance Strategy, ICAEW

Alex is ICAEW’s Head of Audit and Assurance Strategy and leads ICAEW’s Audit and Assurance Faculty.  

His responsibilities include overseeing practical technical guidance for members on audit and assurance matters, including  ISA implementation, auditor reporting, and, increasingly, sustainability assurance, and overseeing thought leadership and other projects on audit quality and UK audit reform.

Ian Pay
Ian Pay, Head of Data Analytics and Tech, ICAEW

Ian joined ICAEW as Head of Data Analytics and Tech in March 2022, looking at the role that analytics and technology solutions play in the profession, and supporting the ICAEW’s members in their exploration and development of knowledge around technology.

Prior to this, Ian worked for over 10 years at PwC in Data Analytics, specialising in External Audit and Data Acquisition and developing robust data transformation processes.

Ian is passionate about digital upskilling, and has previously trained as a secondary school teacher and a musician.

Kathryn Cearns
Kathryn Cearns, OBE

Kathryn Cearns is a Chartered Accountant who is a specialist in financial reporting, auditing and corporate governance, including the reporting and auditing aspects of company law.

Kathryn chaired the ICAEW Financial Reporting Committee for 10 years and in 2016 stepped down from six years of chairing the Financial Reporting Advisory Board to HM Treasury on public sector reporting.

Kathryn now works predominantly as a non-executive director and among other appointments chairs the audit and risk committees at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and National Highways, and she is a board member at the UK Accounting Standards Endorsement Board. She was previously on the External Audit Committee of the IMF and a Non-executive board member at the UK Supreme Court. 

Rhodri Whitlock
Rhodri Whitlock, Quality and Governance Consultant

Rhodri can draw on over 25 years partner level experience providing a range of assurance and advisory services to high growth SMEs through to public interest entities and, supporting national and international audit quality initiatives within a top ten firm. Complementing his practice experience, Rhodri has also worked with the Financial Reporting Council on a range of audit quality and thematic projects.

Rhodri runs his own consultancy business working with audit firms and corporate entities advising on a range of quality, technical and governance areas. 

Dame Kelly Holmes
Dame Kelly Holmes, Guest Speaker

Dame Kelly Holmes joined the British Army at seventeen, serving for nearly ten years as a qualified HGV driver and Physical Training Instructor.

During a twelve-year international career, Kelly won multiple medals at the Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic level, culminating in two Gold Medals at the Athens Olympics Games for the 800m and 1500m, which cemented her place in history as the first women ever in Great Britain to win two gold medals at the same games.

In an emotional and powerful documentary called Kelly Holmes: Being Me, she came out publicly as a gay woman. Kelly explained how after thirty-four years of fear, she finally feels free to be her authentic self and wants to use her voice to educate and inform on Diversity & Inclusion matters.

Today Kelly is a Global Inspirational Speaker, an award-winning author, as well as championing fitness, wellness, and mental health.

Lindsey Tyler
Lindsey Tyler, Audit & Assurance Partner, Azets

Lindsey Tyler is the UK Head of Audit for Azets. Lindsey is responsible for the strategy, growth, innovation and technical compliance of the audit service line in the UK.  Lindsey completed her training with KPMG and has been with Azets for the past 8 years.

Lindsey also has a portfolio of clients in a variety of sectors including property development, technology and distribution.  Lindsey’s client base also has a variety of different ownership structures from large UK privately owned groups to PE backed businesses.

In her Audit role, Lindsey also sits on the Azets national leadership team.  She is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion and is passionate about developing the next generation of talent within Azets.

Sarah is an Audit Principal within the financial services department of Grant Thornton Ireland. Sarah specialises in the provision of a range of audit and assurance services to the financial services industry, particularly in the areas of asset management, aviation and technology.

 

She has over 15 years’ experience working with a range of global asset managers who have used Ireland as a location for the establishment and/or servicing of UCITS funds, hedge funds, funds of hedge funds, alternative investment funds and private equity funds.

 

Sarah is involved with numerous industry working groups and currently sits as Chair of the Irish Funds Member Engagement Group. She is also on the Executive Committee of the Green Team Network.

James joined Saffery in 2022 to lead the adoption of audit data analytics. Combining previous experiences as an auditor, audit technical team member and as an audit technology lead, he is now responsible for many of Saffery’s audit technologies. A large part of his current role requires working between IT and the audit teams to identify and evaluate new technologies then managing the business change process including communications, working with technical for necessary methodology adjustments and training for the audit teams.

James is also on the board of the ICAEW South network for regional members.

Ronnie G Corbett
Ronnie Corbett, Culture & Root Cause Director, Audit, Grant Thornton

Ronnie Corbett, is a Director of Audit Culture and Root Cause at Grant Thornton. Ronnie’s journey began with a brief stint in the Royal Marines, eventually finding purpose in the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 2000. Over a span of ten years in the RAF, he specialised as an air traffic controller, embarking on various tours that included RAF Valley (the fast jet training centre of the RAF) and a tenure as an instructor at the air traffic control school in Shropshire. Ronnie was deployed to Basrah, Iraq in 2007.

Ronnie transitioned from the military to become a civilian air traffic controller. His pursuits led him to train with NATS, qualifying as an area and approach controller, with the opportunity to manage Heathrow approach radar. He became a Watch Manager, contributing at airports including Liverpool and East Midlands.

Parallel to his journey as an air traffic controller, Ronnie cultivated a decade-long expertise as an aviation incident investigator.  Shifting paths in 2021 Ronnie joined Grant Thornton, where he has spent the past three years working to help create a bespoke audit culture through psychological safety and speaking up.

Karen Wardell Moore Kingston Smith
Karen Wardell, Partner, Moore Kingston Smith

Karen acts for a mixed portfolio of clients from start ups to large groups in the nonprofit, property, telecommunications, retail, media and manufacturing sectors.

She advises on all areas of their financial affairs, covering not only accounting, audit and tax matters, but the many and varied challenges involved with running a business on a daily basis, including helping clients make informed decisions about their own financial planning.

Tim Gonzaga, Technical Director, Moore Kingston Smith

As a director in the firm’s technical department, Tim Gonzaga is relied upon by Partners and clients alike on matters relating to financial reporting and auditing issues.

With technical areas often a challenge to understand, Tim writes and delivers training courses for both clients and teams at Moore Kingston Smith.

Tim works on financial reporting projects for his clients, including specific reports on the application of accounting standards including IFRS across several sectors including property, media, and charities.

Khiet joined UHY Hacker Young LLP in January 2020. 

Khiet has over 16 years’ experience working in the Technical and Training field mainly focusing on mid-tier audit firms.  

She is also part of the UK Mid-Tier Firms’ Technical Working group as well as attending the UK Mid-Tier Ethics Partners meeting and often attends both the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) and Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW) discussion workshops, sharing her insights on audit matters.

Her focus is improving the firm’s Audit Quality through providing technical support and training to both trainees and qualified auditors on the International Standards on Auditing (ISAs), UK General Accounting Practice (UK GAAP) and UK adopted International Accounting Standards.

Gwyn Griffiths, Chief Risk Officer, Crowe

Gwyn qualified as an auditor in Deloitte’s (then Touche Ross) audit division, where he managed the audits of (amongst others) two international airports, a major cosmetics company, building firms, a local authority and an acute hospital trust, he performed fraud investigations and contributed to stock exchange documents. Gwyn moved into risk management over 30 years ago, responsible for advising teams on acceptance decisions, engagement and reporting terms, contributing to the public policy debates on auditor liability and audit responsibility.  Gwyn managed professional indemnity claims and regulatory investigations for several years, and was a partner in Deloitte’s forensic practice for two years in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.

In his CRO role at Crowe, Gwyn is on the firm’s Quality Management Steering group, navigating the demands of ISQM 1, participates in the Public Interest Committee, helping it to operate effectively under the Audit Firm Governance Code.  He is responsible for the firm’s enterprise risk framework and assurance programme and oversees the firm’s regulatory compliance and risk management.

Prior to his accountancy career, Gwyn obtained a degree in Biochemistry and was a pilot in the Royal Air Force.  The science background is reflected in the  intellectual rigour Gwyn applies in his approach to risk management; the lessons learned in officer training underpin Gwyn’s approach to leadership, accountability, resilience and ethics.
